A Resident Assistant (RA) provides direct personal care for residents.  The role of the RA is to guide or assist residents with those activities of daily living (“ADL’s”) that they are unable to perform without guidance, fostering at all times residents’ independence and freedom of choice.  All responsibilities will be conducted in a manner that is consistent with the assisted living philosophy.

The duties and responsibilities of the position are to be carried out in a manner that is consistent with the mission, values and operating principles of Vista Grande Villa.

Exempt Status: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Trellis Gardens Director of Nursing Services, Staff Nurse
Essential Job Duties:
  1. Provides personal care and assists with ADL’s as needed.
  2. Provides in-house escort services to beauty shop, activities, and dinner.
  3. Provides guidance and assistance with telephone, housekeeping tasks, correspondence.
  4. Monitors and reports any change in physical health of residents.
  5. Reports and records resident and resident-related events.
  6. Serves meals and assists residents during the dining activity.
  7. Assists with medication reminders, hydration, and monitors nutrition.
  8. Delivers meal trays to residents who are unable to go to dining room.
  9. Participates in and assists with resident-centered activity program.
  10. Must be committed to providing excellent customer service and to Vista Grande Villa’s Standard of Performance.
Other Duties:
  1. Responds to and acts appropriately in emergency or natural disasters.
  2. Works to foster team initiative among varied disciplines.
  3. Demonstrates and appreciates the heritage, values, and wisdom of the residents and an understanding of the normal changes of aging.
  4. Participates in in-service and education programs.
  5. Assists with quality improvement programs.
  6. Performs specific work duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education: Nursing Assistant certification preferred but not required with registration in the state of Michigan.  Must be able to understand and follow instructions in English, communicate effectively, and perform simple arithmetic. Ability to document care given in writing and verbally.

Experience: Prior geriatric nursing assistant experience preferred. Good assessment skills.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

Complexity: Comprehensive knowledge of applicable nursing assistant principles and practices to insure quality of care standards for residents are maintained. Must be self-motivated and function as an “in-charge” person. Must possess a high degree of interpersonal relations skills and capability of relating to a variety of people and personalities. Considerable initiative, judgment, and leadership skills are also required.

Supervision: Under the direct supervision of the Charge Nurse.

Other Contact: Constant contact with residents and staff. Contact requires the ability to communicate in English, both written and verbal, and a cooperative and courteous attitude despite simultaneous tasks.

Errors: Errors could result in declines in health of residents, resident/family dissatisfaction or discomfort.

Confidentiality: May be exposed to confidential information disclosure of which would be contrary to the best interest of the facility and professional ethics. Must be able to maintain confidentiality of resident protected health information according to HIPAA guidelines.

Sensory Demands: Must be able to maintain a cooperative and courteous attitude despite simulation tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Demands Position requires the ability to perform complex tasks that require gross and fine motor skills.  Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds and assist in moving residents.  Demonstrate physical dexterity in moving, bending, stooping, and pulling.  Able to withstand walking or standing for long periods of time.  Must possess sight/hearing senses, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.  Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability in order to cope with the physical, mental, and emotional stress of the position.

Working Conditions: Must be able to work with interruptions.  Majority of work is performed inside the facility but occasionally outdoors.  Exposure to noise, offensive odors, and to peculiarities in behavior and reactions to aging, including combative residents.

Supervisory Scope: None

Travel: Position may require limited local travel.

Safety: Requires ability to understand and follow policies and procedures of infection control, disaster preparedness, safety rules and regulation and facility rules.

Equipment: Emergency call systems, and business equipment, including but not limited to, computer and telephone equipment, facsimile machine and photocopier.
