Seniors and Exercise: Up Your Workout

We tend to slow down and become more sedentary as we grow older for many reasons—from health problems, weight or pain issues to fears of falling. But exercise is more important than ever as we age, because it has so many health benefits.

Exercise Health Benefits

Remarkably, even if you don’t start exercising until your senior years, studies suggest more physical activity can help maintain your independence, boost your energy, protect your heart and manage symptoms of illness as well as your weight. Plus, research shows that getting moving is good for your mind, mood and memory.

If you have a regular exercise routine, bravo! If not, follow this commonsense advice to help you overcome the obstacles and get started.

Three Exercise Tips

Beginning an exercise routine can be a challenge at any age, but it’s never too late to get moving. Jumpstart with these guidelines:

  1. Start slow. Build up steady. If you haven’t been active in a while, begin with brief workouts in ten-minute increments twice a day. Or try just one exercise class each week.
  2. Commit to a schedule. It only takes about 3 to 4 weeks for exercise to become habit. Then try to stick with it by incorporating activities you enjoy.
  3. Listen to your body. Exercise should never make you feel lousy. If you experience pain or discomfort after working out, try shorter bouts of activity throughout the day.

Just Hate to Exercise?

The good news is, you don’t have to don a sweat band or exercise until every muscle aches to get health benefits from physical activity. Amp up activities you already enjoy to start to introduce more exercise into your routine. Your options are endless, but here are a few to get you moving:

▪ Rather than just window shopping, walk a few laps at the mall.

▪ Before that morning coffee date, meet early for a walk and chat with your friend.

▪ If you love taking photos, grab your camera and go for a nature hike.

▪ While listening to music or an audiobook, do a few reps with hand weights.

▪ To make new friends, take up Tai Chi or try a yoga class at a fitness center.

▪ When watching a movie or TV show, move from the sofa to the treadmill.

▪ Walk the golf course rather than using a cart, or get competitive while playing tennis.
