How Seniors Can Stay Safe and Cool This Summer

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors, attend community events with neighbors, and soak up the sunshine. But for seniors, too much heat and increased sun exposure can pose certain health risks. At Vista Grande Villa, our residents’ safety and well-being are our top priority. With a few simple precautions, older adults can make the most of the hot, summer season while staying comfortable and protected.

Here are six top summer safety tips for seniors:

  1. Drink Plenty of Water

Dehydration is one of the biggest summertime health concerns for older adults. As we age, our sense of thirst can diminish, making it harder to know when we need fluids. Seniors should aim to drink 6-8 cups of water throughout the day, even when they don’t feel thirsty. Sip a refillable water bottle throughout the day, and enjoy hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and smoothies.

  1. Wear Weather-Appropriate Clothing

Seniors can keep their body cool and protect their skin from the sun by wearing lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection when heading outdoors. Comfortable, supportive footwear can also help prevent slips and falls.

  1. Avoid the Hottest Hours of the Day

The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you plan to spend time outdoors, try to schedule activities in the early morning or later in the evening. If you must be outside during peak hours, stay in shaded areas or use an umbrella for added protection from the sun.

  1. Apply Sunscreen Daily

Leaving your skin unprotected can lead to sunburn and long-term skin damage.  Seniors should apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 before going outside and reapply every two hours.

  1. Recognize the Signs of Heat-Related Illness

Common signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke include dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, headache, confusion, or excessive sweating. If you or a senior loved one shows signs of a heat-related illness, it is important to act quickly and seek medical help right away.

  1. Check in with Friends

When the temperatures are extreme, make it a priority to check in with neighbors, friends, or staff regularly. It’s always good to let someone know your plans when heading outdoors for any period of time. At Vista Grande Villa, we’re always here to support and ensure you are safe and comfortable.

  1. Listen To Your Body

Whether gardening, going for a walk, or attending a summer picnic, pace yourself. Take breaks in the shade, wear sunscreen and bug repellent, and bring water with you. Listen to your body and don’t overdo it.
